THE CHRISTMAS GALLERY

 Dora Wahlroos - Christmas Tree - 1930

The artwork captures a warm, intimate interior scene during the holidays. A large, brightly decorated Christmas tree, illuminated by candles, dominates the left side of the composition. The soft, glowing light contrasts with the cool blue tones of the evening visible through the window on the right. A set table with green chairs suggests a quiet, festive gathering, conveying a sense of peaceful, traditional celebration. The style is impressionistic and painterly, using vibrant colors to evoke a cozy atmosphere.

    Christmas Tree Mandala

This image is a vibrant, abstract, and psychedelic Christmas greeting card.
It features a stylized Christmas tree formed by an array of overlapping, multi-colored circles and spheres of various sizes. The background has a kaleidoscopic, star-like pattern enclosed within an oval border. The dominant colors are bright and saturated, including blues, greens, reds, pinks, and yellows. The text "MERRY CHRISTMAS" is displayed in black capital letters at the bottom of the image. The overall effect is a modern and visually dynamic interpretation of a holiday theme.

Frances Hodgkins - The Christmas Tree - 1945

Depicts various objects and figures in a vibrant, abstract style, including birds (such as a robin) and a skeletal figure, against a green background. The work has been interpreted as a reflection on peace and light after the darkness of war, using symbols of renewal like trees and robins. It is considered a significant work, reflecting her established reputation as one of Britain's leading modernists.

    Father Christmas

This image features a detailed figurine of Santa Claus standing on a snowy, abstract background. The Santa figure has a long white beard, a smiling expression, and is wearing a traditional brown and black patterned sweater with matching boots and a hat. He is holding a pair of wooden skis and poles in one hand and a sack over his shoulder with the other. The background has a symmetrical, icy blue and white snowflake pattern. The words "MERRY CHRISTMAS" are written in black capital letters at the bottom of the image.

    Joseph Stella - Serenade, A Christmas Fantasy - 1937

A dazzling, nocturnal painting that blends elements of modernism, surrealism, and symbolism. Framed by a dark archway, the composition centers on a glowing, fantastic tree or flower form that emerges from a conch shell.
The central stem shoots upward past an abstract, mobile-like object that features iridescent, colorful shards, recalling the artist's earlier Futurist works. The surrounding deep blue night sky is filled with starlight, contributing to the work's mystical quality and evoking the spirit of Christmas.
The painting incorporates several subtle elements traditionally associated with the Nativity, including a holly branch and the faint outlines of an ox and an ass in the upper right spandrel. A bird is perched on a branch in the lower left, and a blue, swan-like form rests in the foreground. The painting is a visionary composition, open to multiple readings, and is characteristic of Stella's mature symbolist style. The work evokes feelings of joy, peace, and celebration.

William Ely Hill - Christmas Puck - 1913
Depicts an anxious-looking snowman standing between two young women wearing clown costumes during a snowy evening. The women are holding mistletoe over the snowman's head, suggesting an impending kiss.

    Angarrack Christmas Lights

These lights are part of a display in Angarrack, a village in Cornwall, UK, known for its extensive Christmas light tradition. The three ships are a reference to the traditional Christmas carol, "I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In". The carol tells of three ships bringing the Virgin Mary and Jesus to Bethlehem on Christmas Day morning. The Angarrack display is a significant local event, often involving elaborate and thematic light installations each year.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS

This image is a reproduction of a vintage Victorian or early 1900s Christmas illustration showing a Father Christmas in an early automobile. The image depicts two figures resembling Father Christmas  (although not the real Father Christmas) driving a vintage car filled with presents and toys. The original artwork is described as a "Victorian scrap" or a design from the turn of the century (circa 1890s-1900s). During the Victorian era, early depictions of Santa Claus were varied and not standardized to the modern red suit. The text at the top reads "MERRY CHRISTMAS"

    Christmas Rose

This image is a vibrant, symmetrical "Christmas Rose Starburst Mandala". It features a complex, kaleidoscope pattern primarily in shades of pink and green, with accents of white and grey. The design radiates from the center in a starburst shape, incorporating repeated floral motifs that create an intricate geometric and abstract design. The overall effect is a textured, circular ornamental pattern.

     Oskar Laske - Christmas - 1940

Oskar Laske was a prominent Austrian painter and architect known for his vibrant, colorful style, and he often worked in watercolor. The piece depicts a cozy domestic Christmas scene, with a decorated tree and figures indoors, contrasting with a reindeer and animals looking in from the snowy night outside the window

    Crisply Merrimas

Features a cute Christmas gnome with a red tartan hat and body, a white heart, and a large grey beard, set against a background of icy blue and white patterns.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR

The image is a Victorian New Year's card featuring a cherub-like child with blonde hair riding a large butterfly across a cloudy sky. The text on the card conveys a seasonal greeting.

I COME TO WISH YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR
