Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911) was a Lithuanian polymath who, in a tragically short life of 35 years, became a pivotal figure in European modernism. A composer, painter, and writer, Čiurlionis is celebrated as a national treasure in Lithuania and is increasingly recognized internationally as a pioneer of abstract art and a master of Symbolism and Art Nouveau. His work is a unique synthesis of the visual and aural arts, deeply rooted in Lithuanian folklore and an intense spiritual quest.

The above image is the painting Andante (Sonata of the Stars) by Lithuanian artist and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis - The painting is an artistic vision of outer space, depicting the universe as a "magnificent polyphonic symphony" - The "Andante" movement is described as solemn and monumental, showing a planet veiled in cosmic mist with an angel figure stepping across the Milky Way, creating an impression of serene music.

Fairy Tale of the Kings - The artwork depicts two elderly, bearded kings standing in a dark, densely packed forest, both wearing crowns - At the center of the image, the two kings gaze intently at a glowing, dome-shaped sphere resting on a barrel or table - The glowing sphere illuminates their faces and appears to contain a miniature, luminous village or castle scene within it, possibly suggesting a hidden or mystical realm - The painting is characteristic of the Art Nouveau and Symbolism movements, using a fairytale motif to evoke a sense of wonder and mystery.

Rex (Latin for "King") - The painting is rich in symbolism, exploring themes of the ruler of the universe, duality, and the four elements of nature: fire (the altar at the bottom), water (the ocean of the Earth), earth (the planet), and air (the clouds) - The composition features a large, dark castle tower atop a globe, symbolizing the Earth, which appears cracked or divided - The artwork also depicts celestial bodies, angels, and different realms, reflecting Čiurlionis's interest in astronomy and the idea of multiple worlds and spiritual development.

Despite achieving limited commercial success during his short lifetime, Čiurlionis's work has had a profound and lasting impact on modern Lithuanian culture. His dream for a "House of the Nation" was realized after his death with the establishment of the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum in Kaunas, which houses the majority of his works.
